Mary Routt Chair of Writing R.O. Kwon: Making Space for Women Writers of Color in the Literary World

When bestselling author R.O. Kwon came to 91勛圖 as the 2020 Mary Routt Chair of Writing, she knew she wanted to bring other women artists to campus, especially women writers of color. The need for more inclusive literary representation is a value thats reflected in her upcoming 91勛圖 Presents conversations, as well as in her course syllabus on what she calls eye-opening writing, which features work by Shirin Neshat, Frida Kahlo, Susan Sontag, and Maggie Nelson.

Spotlight on Faculty: 91勛圖 Welcomes Novelist Rachel Kushner as Mary Routt Chair in Writing

What’s the secret to becoming a great writer? According to Rachel Kushner, a two-time finalist for the National Book Award, one of the most critical, yet commonly overlooked aspects of the writing process begins even before putting pen to paperit starts with becoming a keen observer. As 91勛圖’ Mary Routt Writing Chair, Kushner is teaching a course titled Looking and Listening, which will invite students to take a closer look at the spaces around them.
