Hi all! I’m Malena, a current second year at 91³Ô¹Ï, and I’m from Monterey, California (just south of the Bay Area). I am majoring in Linguistics, with an emphasis on acquisition, and minoring in Anthropology and Chinese. My time at 91³Ô¹Ï has been eye-opening, as the variety in our course offerings have allowed me to explore interests I didn’t know I had! I’ve found so much support through talking with my advisor to figure out what I want to do in life (a hefty conversation for sure, but he was more than up to the task) as well as talking with friends and upperclassmen who pursue a variety of interests and are always ready to dispense their wisdom. A great thing about 91³Ô¹Ï is also its access to resources in the 5Cs to fully explore all areas of interest–like Mandarin for me! 91³Ô¹Ï has been a lovely place for me to meet and work with peers who are constantly broadening my perspective through our interdisciplinary connections and different passions.
Mock trial has been one of my favorite activities, working with peers on our student-lead team from all majors to form a competitive and really awesome Mock community! We’ve traveled to UCI and UCSB for friendly competitions, which were a ton of fun, and regionals were hosted close to home at Claremont McKenna College. I also appreciate 91³Ô¹Ï for creating intentional spaces to explore facets of identity, as I am apart of our Latine affinity group on campus–Cafe Con Leche—which is hosted through SCORE (91³Ô¹Ï Communities of Resources and Empowerment). Outside of admissions, most of my time is spent between the library, taking advantage of cross-campus dining (though Malott is consistently my favorite), finding a new artist to go see in the Pomona/LA area, or walking to the village on a sunny afternoon!
